Herakut - After The Laughter Book Signing

After the Laughter – Herakut

Shea & Ziegler are proud to announce Herakut’s much anticipated return to London, the duo’s first since 2008. Alongside an collection of all new artworks the German pair will be unveiling and signing copies of their new book ‘After The Laughter’, which offers an intimate insight into the individuals behind their emotionally-charged artwork and dynamic partnership.

Designed as a revealing scrapbook ‘After The Laughter’ is hand-crafted by both Hera and Akut, and features all new murals, works on canvas, and sketches. The book is collaged with images in different mediums and includes revealing photographs of the duo, both at work and at play. All elements are woven into a multi-layered, poetic reflection on art and its role in the world, with a range of freeform ideas penned artfully on the book pages in Herakut’s signature lettering. Masking-tape edges and crossed out pencil confessions complete the personal, forthright style — an open invitation into the frenzied minds and rapid-fire hands of a unique artistic team.

Nelly Duff presents Banger Art

Now in its 10th year, this years Lovebox festival in East London will be celebrating with some impressive headliners including Grace Jones, Chaka Khan, Lana Del Rey, Kelis, Hot Chip & Friendly Fires. Alongside all the live acts and DJ's Lovebox have invited Columbia Road based galley Nelly Duff to celebrate a 'Decade Of Love' with a banger of an art show!

Nelly Duff will be curating an installation of 10 old bangers. Unloved and destined for the scrapheap, they will be recycling these bangers with some painterly pimping by some of the world’s best urban artists. Street Art royalty Ben EINE should cause a big old traffic jam with his original artwork on steel. The awesome impasto imagery of Matt Small offset on a taxi bonnet is set to be a sight to behold, and East London favorite Sweetoof’s roadworthy play on classical based imagery will prove an experience. Dan Hillier’s abstract splicing of Victoriana imagery from a distinctly British time gone by will also feature, along with Dr D’s playfully direct mode of social and political commentary, and the dream-like painting of Will Barras. These are artists of the highest caliber, with characteristically unpredictable processes.

Together they will create 10 distinctly individual artworks set to steal the show. The banger artworks along side additional smaller works will be on display at Lovebox throughout the three day extravaganza, running from 15th - 17th June 2012. More details and the full artist line up over on the Nelly Duff website

Pandamonium at Signal Gallery

Over the years, it appears that several of Signal Galleries artists have become inspired by the iconic image of the Panda. In whatever form they emerge, whether as the bear itself or a human figure sporting an animal mask, these works always seem to be a sure-fire hit. So Signal thought… why don't we ask a large group of artists to pay homage to the Panda and produce an entire exhibition dedicated to the cuddly creatures, resulting in a sell-out, recession-proof show?

The fabulous group of artists who are taking part in the show so far include: C215, Dale Grimshaw, Jef Aerosol, Elinor Evans, Byroglyphics (Russ Mills), SPQR, TRXTR, David Le Fleming, Gaye Black, Frank Rannou, Joram Roukes and newcomers to Signal; Lora Zombie, Chris Bell and Jane Price.

The gallery have gained the support of the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and we will be donating some of the huge profits made from the show to help protect our furry friends.

The show runs from 1st Jun - 16th Jun 12 2012.
Private View 31st May 6 - 9pm. To be included on the guest list please email the gallery at info@signalgallery.com.

These Streets - Baltimore Street Art Film

Everyman

In a rapidly vacating city, street art makes Baltimore beautiful.

"We will establish street art as a sub culture and focus on two characters in the Baltimore wheat pasting scene with additional footage of supporting voices. Many street artists in Baltimore are interested in the various effects of street art, ranging from beautification/gentrification of an area to simple public egotism. By analyzing the different types of street art through the eyes of wheat pasters, we will look at how street art has changed Baltimore neighborhoods, as well as legal versus illegal postings and what effects they have on a community. "

Credits: Clary Estes, Gabe Dinsmoor, and Alice Richard filmed, directed and produced. Clary Estes edited the video. Street artists Nether, Jerome, and Gaia participated in the making of this documentary. The music was composed by 6th Sense.

Penny's 'Economy of Scale' Exhibition at Rook & Raven Gallery

Rook & Raven proudly present ‘Economy of Scale’, the very first solo exhibition from the rapidly rising, multi-disciplinary artist Penny, which will showcase an entirely new body of work featuring signature paintings on currency, taxidermy and phenomenally intricate stencils, together with never before seen techniques from the London-based artificer.

With undeniable guile and the steady hands of a surgeon, Penny has skilfully taken the art of stencilling to zenlike heights, dedicating himself to pioneering the art of cutting, whilst still maintaining a succinct and boldly recognisable style. His process is intensely laboured, sometimes taking hundreds of hours to cut every elaborate detail, ensuring every image is seminal and every release an instant sell out.

Penny’s first major display of work will make wry reference to everything from religion, the Renaissance and the Victorian era, featuring a pick and mix Penny Shop, where a selection of smaller-scale works will be on sale alongside the main body of artwork; and of course, no show would be complete without a new selection of Penny’s highly sought-after single notecurrency and his now signature works on uncut sheets of dollars, sourced directly from the Federal Reserve. Economy of Scale is itself a paradigm, showcasing small stencils, big ideas and the notion that currency itself can become a work of art, which in turn becomes more valuable when altered. After all, the devil is in the detail.

Economy of Scale opens to the public on the 18th of May through to June 21st 2012. Private View takes place on 17th May from 6.30pm until 9.30pm.

Pete Fowler X Post Living Tables

Post Living have produced some rather lovely new tables made in conjunction with Pete Fowler. 'The Owlers' collection sees each table design come with 2 limited edition prints giving you a menage a trois of awesome Pete Fowler art for £125.00. Surely one of the coolest ways ever to display your vinyl art toy collection? 3 images = 1 x Table // 2 x Wall Art. Art vs Furniture. You decide? Here's what Pete Fowler had to say about the collection:

"I’ve always been interested in furniture and ways of introducing functionality to artwork and vice versa, so this project with Post Living caught my attention.

This series of images are drawn from my most recent work using the ipad to paint with. It’s such an immediate tool to use, like a sketchbook but with full colour at your fingertips. To anyone who is familiar with my work, owls started cropping up as I started to become comfortable using the ipad.

A group of almost half owl-half human characters appeared over a few days painting and they seemed to be alive and could do with a home, it seemed perfect to set them free in people’s living rooms. Are they a family or related? I’ll leave that up to whoever lives with them but I’ve just called them the Owlers after a group of beloved friends."

For more info visit the Post Living website to see more images of these Pete Fowler editions, plus some of the other artists and illustrators they have collaborated with. You can also purchase the tables directly from their website.

Faile 104 North 7th Project Video

VICE and 42Below recently collaborated with Brooklyn-based artists FAILE on their permanent installation, The 104 North 7th Project. The piece consists of thousands of handmade tiles designed by the artists, each individually pressed and painted, and then fired in a wood-burning kiln and shipped to the installation site. The tiles were then applied to the surface of the building by the artists and a team of helpers over several days.

Well known for their explorations of duality through a fragmented style of appropriation and collage, as well as their use of unique materials, FAILE have created a beautiful tapestry of color, giving life and personality to a very plain structure.

Herakut x Loving the Exiled Video

Nice little time-lapse put together by photographer Colin M Day featuring Herakut working on a pretty huge canvas for "Loving the Exiled", at 941 Geary Gallery.

"Herakut’s earth tones are layered upon each other, creating images that blend in with the environment around them. Though it’s not just in palette through which the work presents an interest in nature. The people and animals that stand at the center of Herakut’s pieces are created as a commentary on human nature, on the ups and downs of all the small wars we fight within ourselves."

Hemingway Design for Hush Puppies

I recently got to have a look at the upcoming AW12 collection from Hush Puppies. This coming season sees the release of their first premium British footwear collection with the introduction of ‘Hemingway Design for Hush Puppies’ a standalone men’s footwear collection ‘Inspired by British Club Culture and Hush Puppies Iconic Heritage’.

The new collection was recently launched at one of our local East End boozer Jaguar Shoes on Kingsland Road. The excellent event was hosted by Coffin on Cake PR and saw them completely transform the venue for the launch of the new collection. I have posted some photos of our favorite shoes from the collection and below is a great video from the Jaguar Shoes launch party.

94 Elements — Global Filmmaking Project

There are 94 naturally occurring elements, from Hydrogen to Plutonium. Together, they make up everything in the entire world. Affecting each of our lives in countless ways, they are commodities crucial to the way that we live. They are the untold stories of our physical existence.

Motivated by the speed at which we're using up our mineral resources, documentary producer and director Mike Paterson today launches 94 Elements, a new web-based filmmaking project bringing together award-winning filmmakers and the best emerging filmmaking talent to create original films about the endless ways each element affects our daily lives.

With support from Wellcome Trust, Paterson has already commissioned Sundance-winner Nino Kirtadze and BAFTA-winner Marc Isaacs for the first two films. In order to reach the total of 94 films, each telling its own story, 94 Elements needs help from you. There are three ways you can get involved:

Become part of the project on the 94 Elements Indiegogo campaign by donating. You'll get to help decide which films are made over the lifetime of the project, and in return team you will receive some fantastic rewards that the team have created for you.

If you're a filmmaker, there are 2 opportunities (click on 'Pitch your films') to win $8000 to make a new film for the project. You have 4 weeks to pitch your ideas!

Watch the first films by Sundance-winner Nino Kirtadze, BAFTA-winner Marc Isaacs, and Paterson now on the project website and share across your social networks!

To accompany the films, 94 Elements is also launching a dynamic digital platform for the project to explore our complex relationships with our resources. Working with the award-winning design studio Catalogtree, the platform will combine Twitter streams and live commodity prices for each element with resource mapping features using geological and commodity data from the UN and US Geological Survey to create an innovative visualisation of our daily interactions with our mineral resources.
