NO-Way in association with Ghostown present Toshio Saeki

NO WAY in collaboration with Ghostown and the Print House Gallery in Dalston present the first ever UK exhibition of works by ‘the Master of Japanese Erotica’, Toshio Saeki.

Born in Miyazaki, Japan, 1945, Toshio Saeki’s extreme and polemical images depict themes of repressed desire, subversive sexual acts, violence, and merge influences from Japanese Surrealism, Shunga, (Japanese Erotic Art from the Medieval period) and Western comics laden with Saeki’s unique black humour and unrestrained, insatiable imagination.

This controversial aspect of Saeki’s work is underpinned by his undeniably significant contributions to contemporary art, both inside Japan, - where he has exhibited prolifically since the 1970s - and internationally, since his European debut in Paris in 1970. ‘Saeki’s artwork is the harmonious synthesis of a perverse vision and an incredible artistic ability, challenging social norms by placing the unconscious in plain view.’ (Juxtapoz)

This will be the first time the 67- year-old artist’s work will be for sale in the UK, the exhibition includes rare edition silkscreen, letterpress and offset prints as well as original ink works, some of which have never been seen outside of Japan.

Opening Party | March 28th 2013 | 7pm
Exhibition | Daily 10am to 6pm | March 29 to May 1 2013

Charming Baker - LIE DOWN I THINK I LOVE YOU Video

Video from the recent opening of London based artist Charming Baker’s solo exhibition ‘Lie Down I Think I Love You’, at Milk Studios, Los Angeles CA.

Baker’s work explores well-trodden and intrinsically linked themes; life, love, death, terror, joy, despair… with an underlying reference to the classics and a dark humour. Although primarily a painter with an interest in narrative and an understanding of the tradition of painting, in recent years Baker has produced sculptural pieces in a wide and varied choice of materials, (from the anciently traditional to the not so).

Nelly Duff present Gaia's ‘A Show of Hands’ London Exhibition

East London gallery Nelly Duff is proud to present the premier solo UK exhibition of one of the most profound social muralists of recent years.

Baltimore born Gaia is a rare man of both extraordinary artistry, and social conscience. Over the past 7 years, the mighty force of Gaia’s unique style has been showcased across large scale urban walls worldwide, attempting to aid positive social development by making an active impact on the surrounding community.

On April 11th, the stage will be set at The Ravenscroft Public House, a one time social hub, now a forgotten relic of the failures of social housing. It is here that Nelly Duff will introduce ‘Show of Hands’, an exhibition of original drawings. Every delicately rendered finger and sensitively shaded knuckle, highlights the anonymous struggle of each subject, weaving a complex modern narrative of urban poverty comparable to the emotive anatomical etchings of past masters.

‘Each set of hands is a reminder that while there is a common humanity within all of us, that ultimately our differences and experiences in a supposedly global world can never be universally reconciled.’ – Gaia.

Preview 11th April, 6- 9pm (RSVP: hello@nellyduff.com )
Exhibition runs from 11th April - 18th April.

Graffiti art Old Street Takeover for CALM

On Sunday 24th March, a team of well-known graffiti artists will paint a powerful message across three billboards at Old Street,London to highlight the three young male suicides that occur on average every day in the UK. The work will be displayed for 36 hours before being auctioned in aid of CALM, the campaign against living miserably, dedicated to preventing male suicide. Everyone is invited to come along and watch the art take shape, plus visitors are encouraged to lay flowers at the site in memory of those lost to suicide.

Volunteers from CALM will be onsite during the day to give more information about the charity and visitors may even get the chance to meet the artists. Refreshments, merchandise and entertainment will also be available.

Ad agency Beattie McGuinness Bungay (BMB) has been working with Soulful Creative and CALM with the support of JCDecaux and Red Gallery to put the project together. The artists involved go by the name of Koze, 45rpm and Richt and between them have over 20 years experience of painting graffiti around London and Bristol.

The billboard site is on the south side of Old Street at the junction with Pitfield Street and Gt Eastern Street, EC2

Miranda Donovan - ‘ Walls’ at The Outsiders

Walls is Miranda Donovan's third exhibition with The Outsiders. It sees the London-based artist's work evolving along the path set by previous shows such as Lost World of Innocence into an impressively cohesive vision.

For this exhibition, Donovan will present over twenty paintings all of which return to her ongoing fascination with walls. This time they are often life-size in scale. Due to the sheer physicality and weightiness of these larger pieces, on initial glance these works may seem to the viewer to be walls literally hacked out from their surroundings and displayed in a gallery – but in fact they are sculptures, where even the bricks are fabricated, reproduced in a super-real style through the prism of Miranda's artistry.

New Street Art Book by Claudelondon

Street art is part of every cityscape. By street art, we mean the crazy and wonderful stencils, paste-ups, paintings and little sculptures that decorate our urban landscape, catching our eyes and surprising us with their beauty, humour or pithy comment on society. It is, however, ephemeral and the work can disappear very quickly or be damaged by the elements or vandalism. Through his website, Claudelondon has documented thousands of works by artists active in the city. Banksy has already become a household name and the success of his movie 'Exit Through the Giftshop' has raised the profile of street art even further. On a state visit, Prime Minister David Cameron gave President Obama a painting by street artist Eine.

The street art scene in London is one of the most vibrant in the world attracting not only local artists, but also artists from other countries. Street art galleries are popping up everywhere and attracting lots of visitors. Guided street art walks are appearing in major cities in the UK, the US and other countries.

This book will cover over 150 artists and include around 275 photos. While including some of the more established street artists such as Eine, Invader, Banksy, Roa, David Walker and Swoon, the author also includes some of the new generation of street artists like Stik, Public Spirit, Xylo, Elbow Toe, Ludo, T. Wat among others who create wonderful quirky pieces that deserve a wider audience. A must have for anyone interested in street art, urban street culture or contemporary art. The new book is available now on  Amazon

Spraying Bricks - SHOWCASE - TIZERONE

SHOWCASE is the newest strain to be introduced to the Spraying Bricks channel. Many artists either approach or (more the case) are approached by galleries to exhibit their work. The hope is to sell every piece. Spraying Bricks is to explore the build up, preparation and opening night, showcasing that these talented artists are not just restricted to painting walls and trains but have alternative avenues in making it a career.

The first SHOWCASE is TIZERONE. We accompanied him on the Wednesday from his studio to PURE EVIL GALLERY where we help set up for the next day. TIZER seemed slightly nervous as this was his first solo show, however Charlie from PURE EVIL had every bit of confidence. The opening night writers and artists from all across the UK and some even as far as Iran turned up to support and admire the work of this modest artist. Get down there before it all goes!

The ever loveable character TIZERONE from the ID crew needs no introduction. A graffiti writer and illustrator from London, TIZER is somewhat of a veteran in the game ,with his career stretching across three decades. From the early days of half drunk track walking to rubbing shoulders with the likes of Bono TIZER has travelled the world with his skill-set and yet he is still one of the most humble artists you'll ever meet.

The show will be running at the PURE EVIL GALLERY, 108 LEONARD STREET, LONDON, EC2 4XS from the 7th - 30th March 2013.

Diverse Elements Show with Kai & Sunny and Leif Podhajsky

Pertwee, Anderson & Gold Gallery in association with Daydreaming Projects present 'Diverse Elements', a group exhibition of works by Kai & Sunny and Leif Podhajsky, whose artistic practice straddles the increasingly unstable boundaries between fashion, advertising, graphic design and fine art.

Kai & Sunny are a multidisciplinary duo who's work appears in many arenas of art. Their intricate, natural and sometimes sinister style has led them to collaborate with Alexander McQueen and has won them numerous accolades including a 2012 DA&D Design Award, and book covers with author David Mitchell. The artists have exhibited internationally, showing at Haunch Of Venison London, and have recently been included in the Victoria & Albert Museum print archive collection. The duo are currently exploring natural forms with large-scale monotone works through print making.

Leif Podhajsky is an artist and Creative Director. His work explores themes of connectedness, the relevance of nature and the psychedelic or altered experience. By utilising these subjects he attempts to inspire the viewer into a realignment with themselves and their surroundings. The Australian artist and creative director has masterminded the visuals for Foals’ hotly-anticipated third album, ‘Holy Fire’, and quickly become the go-to guy for the likes of Sub Pop, Modular, Warp Records and more.

Street Artist ROA x The SK8room Limited Edition Skate Decks

To celebrate the launch of The SK8room, the first online platform to promote fine art skateboards around the world, the site teamed up with notorious street artist ROA on 3 variations of limited edition skateboard decks that will be available from the 11th of March. Twenty percent of all sales will be donated to Skateistan, a not-for-profit that teaches empowerment through skateboarding to children in impoverished countries like Afghanistan and Cambodia.

As the pioneer dealer for art on skateboards, The SK8room has created its own production line of high quality decks. Their first production is with the Belgian street artist ROA. Recognized around the world for his large scale, yet delicately detailed spray painted animals, ROA was chosen as the first artist collaboration because of his roots in skateboard culture and its cultural relevance to street art:

"I skateboarded as a kid. I grew up in the 80’s so skateboarding for me was one of the most important things as a teenager and it came together for me with graffiti and hip-hop culture. So it was really important and you see now it still influences me. Early Skateboard graphics of Powell and Santa Cruz had such a special meaning for me as a teenager to begin with and it is still a big part of my life. "

As part of the ongoing project, ROA and The SK8room traveled to Cambodia to visit Skateistan, a global nonprofit that works with youths from various socioeconomic backgrounds to build trust and skills through skateboarding, in order to leave a lasting impression on the country through their combined passions of street art and skateboarding.

Each of the 3 decks (Decay 1, 2 & 3) are printed at 150 ex. +15AP on 7 ply Canadian maple and measure 80x20cm. Each of the 3 versions are a limited edition of 125 signed in the deck boards and 25 hand signed decks. Unsigned decks cost 450€ and hand signed decks cost 950€.

Every purchase includes free international shipping and 20% of sales will be donated to Skateistan. The ROA x The SK8room skate decks will be available for sale only through www.thesk8room.com beginning March 11.

Steven Harrington X Case Studyo

With his latest Case Studyo collaboration, California artist Steven Harrington takes his exploration of balance to a whole new level. Working with wood for the first time ever, Harrington has turned the totem-like structures of his Remain in Balance series into three whimsical, anthropomorphic lamps. Each one represents the harmony we seek in our daily lives, an inspired and inspiring reminder of the importance of equanimity. Harrington’s Remain in Balance lamps are hand carved and hand painted with the utmost care; the hand-splattered linen drum lamp shade adds a bright punch of color to the natural, organic feel of the sculpture. Each lamp is a functional work of art that illuminates, literally and figuratively.

Giles Duley - Afghanistan(2012) Exhibition at KK Outlet

KK OUTLET UNVEILS GILES DULEY’S LATEST AFGHANISTAN PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES, AS HE RETURNS TO THE COUNTRY WHERE NEARLY LOST HIS LIFE.

Whilst embedded with the US army in Afghanistan, British humanitarian photographer Giles Duley stepped on an IED. The explosion left him with horrific injuries and ultimately, a triple amputee.

18 months after sustaining injuries that meant he hovered between and life and death, he kept the promise he made to himself the day of the incident: To return to Afghanistan to complete his work documenting the impact of the invasion on civilians.

In October 2012 Duley returned to the country where he very nearly lost his life and undertook his first major photographic assignment since the explosion. KK Outlet will showcase this new series in an exhibition which runs throughout March.

This new body of work carries on where he left off. A project punctuated by a terrifying personal trauma but one that remains at its heart, exactly the same as when it began. As Duley explains, “The work I do hasn’t changed, but the audience has got bigger. I’m telling the same stories which have always been important to me but my voice has got louder.”

BEN SLOW – ‘NEW ENDINGS’ Show in London

You are invited to the private view of the first solo show by London based Contemporary artist Ben Slow entitled New Endings, at the Exposure Gallery in Mayfair.

New Endings marks a fresh take on the artist's striking style; one which has seen him feature at the Royal Albert Hall, recently named by Time Out as one of the ten street artists from around the world to look out for and invited to paint walls as far afield as South Africa and Israel.

The exhibition is a chance to witness a unique perspective from the artist, offering a breakdown of the portraiture that has been Ben's hallmark. Mixing more traditional materials with the contemporary medium of spray paint, the focus rests on the relationship between familiar representation and a more abstract approach to mark making, the gentle finesse of the face is now starkly contrasted by the strong colour of marks which cut through the canvases. Ben explains:

“The idea with this show was to collate a body of work that expresses where I am right now as a painter. I feel that with my previous work I have taken it as far I wanted”

Progression is very much on Ben's mind; New Endings is a chance to see the latest works from an emerging artist not afraid to strike in new directions.

“It's a step away from the safety of what I know and into something new and exciting. It's important for me to experiment and to be uncomfortable, to question things and go seeking answers. It’s been a challenge collating a body of work that I am proud to showcase for the first time. There has been a lot of trial and error, plenty of mistakes made but that’s a good thing, it’s healthy to fuck a painting up every now and then."

Todd James: World Domination Exhibition

From 6th March Lazarides Gallery presents World Domination, a solo exhibition by celebrated New York artist Todd James, who will present a selection of work in different media for his first solo show in London since 2008.

In a new collection of acrylic paintings, James continues his iconic Somali Pirate series. Often in headgear and masks, and brandishing secondhand AK-47s and RPGs, these pirates perform a range of quotidian activities: smoking cigarettes, drinking tea at sunset, preparing weapons, standing guard. Rendered in a vivid tropical palette, these works vibrate with goodnatured menace, and pointedly address David and Goliath themes of survival, justice, ingenuity, and ownership.

Cash For Your Warhol "CFYW Russian" Limited Edition Print

Earlier in the week Papermonster introduced to the site a new print by the artist known as Cash For Your Warhol. Cash For Your Warhol is the brainchild of Geoff Hargadon, whose photography has appeared in a number art publications and who started the project in 2009. Cash For Your Warhol references art-as-commodity, the financial crisis, and the ubiquitous signage to which it responds. While appearing in a variety of media, the corrugated plastic signs remain today CFYW’s best-known work, featuring a deadpan design that both blends into and frames the landscapes in which they appear.

They released an edition of these corrugated plastic signs on the Paper Monster site. This edition of 200 signs is CFYW's largest edition to date, and was first seen in its public iteration during the Miami 2012 art fairs. Available now for $150 from the Papermonster site here.

Os Gemeos - Art in the Streets - MOCAtv

São Paulo based graffiti artists Os Gemeos (The Twins) are internationally known for their vivid, surrealistic painting style and its playful political commentary. Before they began painting, Os Gemeos were active in their neighborhood's b-boy scene, where hip hop culture had reached by the late 1980s and gained a particularly strong presence. With limited contact to hip hop's origins in New York, Os Gemeos began developing their own technique and style, eventually infusing Brazilian cultural elements and imagery into their work. Since then, Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo have gained worldwide notoriety and an influential fan base.
