ROA at OUTPOST PROJECT Video

The Street art Outpost Project  in the Sydney Harbour finished earlier this month. The OUTPOST PROJECT (4 November - 11 December 2011) transformed the gritty industrial spaces of Cockatoo Island into an explosion of urban art.

"Renowned international and local artists such us ROA (Belgium), Ethos (Brazil), Kid Zoom (USA/Australia), Anthony Lister (USA/Australia) and the Everfresh Collective (Australia) illuminated the island with large-scale installations, live art creations including aerosol art, stencilling, paste-ups, sticker art, cup rocking, sculpture, murals and billboards."

The above clip features ROA and some of the work he created during his time on the island.

Martha Cooper - Here Comes the Neighborhood

Legendary photographer Martha Cooper has been documenting graffiti and graffiti writers since the late 1970s. Her and Henry Chalfant’s book “Subway Art”, originally published in 1984, was largely responsible for the globalization of graffiti. She has remained a fixture in the community and culture, and has been documenting the Wynwood Walls since the project began in 2009. Her photos tell the story of the Wynwood Walls from its inception to expansion, and all of the artists and their respective works. In graffiti and street art, nothing is permanent, even commissioned walls. Because of the temporary nature of the medium, Martha’s photos outlast almost every piece of graffiti or street art itself.

Plus film projections and a trans-gender (over 18’s) ‘Sink The Pink’ Bad Santa’s grotty grotto. Its flash-to-trash this Christmas, regardless of good behaviour, so strut or stumble your way to Brick Lane, Shoreditch for the first-ever SEASON TICKET… you’ll either be glad or sorry you did.

Mr Brainwash Interview and London Show

Street artist Thierry Guetta, aka Mr Brainwash, shot to fame after starring in Banksy’s film, "Exit Through the Gift Shop". The controversial artist was in town during Art Basel Miami Beach and his exhibition, installed for the second year running in a seven-floor building opposite the Bass Museum of Art, provided a hot topic of debate. Anny Shaw caught up with the not so camera shy Mr Brainwash for The Art Newspaper, to discuss his meteoric rise to stardom and his plans for Los Angeles and London.

SEGO & SANER : HCTN EPISODE 5

Part five in the ongoing series of the Here Comes the Neighborhood video interviews featuring various artists at work. In this Episode of Here Comes the Neighborhood, Mexican artists Saner and Sego collaborate on a mural for the Wynwood Walls. They create a colorful dreamscape together, building on themes that each of the artists have explored for years. Saner's interpretation of the work, and his poetic eloquence helps elevate the wall into an ethereal realm, while Sego, traveling to the United States for the first time, brings an astute attention to detail, and a stunning technique grounded in the complexities of the natural world.

These Artists exemplify the power of art, both public and private, to function as a change agent, using this mural as a tool to reframe the worlds view of Mexico; from a dangerous narco state, to one of the most beautiful, mystical and transformative cultures in the world.

Vhils Video Interview

Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle recently filmed a portrait of Portuguese street artist Vhils, who is undoubtedly one of the most skilled and talented young artists on the urban art scene today.

He creates technically masterful, contemporary portraits by not only adding paint or other materials onto surfaces, but also carving, drilling, scratching, ripping, or blasting his images out of walls. With nothing less than archeological meticulousness, Vhils penetrates through countless layers of posters, dirt, and plaster to set free the unsettlingly poetic images hidden in urban spaces.

More info on the new book release including a limited art edition can be found here.
