Attack of the Space Waffles By Invader

Keep watching the skies! Alien (actually, Parisian) menace Invader descends upon an unwitting London in December for ‘Attack of the Space Waffles’, an exhibition of new unique pieces, cosmic curios and otherworldly objets.

A star of Oscar-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, French street artist Invader’s work is beloved of fans. He was one of the artists chosen for inclusion in ‘Art in the Streets’, at the Geffen Contemporary wing of MOCA, Los Angeles, earlier in 2011. The ‘invasions’ themselves, miniature mosaics inspired by cult 1970s arcade game Space Invaders, have truly made their mark on the world appearing everywhere from rainy Gateshead to far-flung Katmandu. A meticulously archived labour of love, Invader’s work charms and inspires, often on the most surprising occasions. Combining nostalgia, sentimentality, playfulness, compulsion plus a giddy affection for youth culture and technology, Invader represents a quantum leap forward for pop art.

‘Attack of the Space Waffles’ is out-there, surreal, and suitably seasonal. Invader’s ‘Space Waffle Machine’ will be in operation, dispensing hot waffles throughout the exhibition for the gallery’s Christmas guests. Pre-made waffles preserved in vacuum packs will also serve as one of the many editions available at the show. An unused ‘Space Waffle Machine’ will also be for sale. Many unique ‘Alias’ versions of some of Invader’s most compelling recent street pieces make up the bulk of the exhibition. The mosaics are presented upon slim black Perspex boxes, with the identity cards specifying the details of the original outdoor work that inspired them inside.

An ‘Invaded Disco Ball’ forms the exhibition’s primary installation, casting celestial visuals and interplanetary vibrations across the gallery’s main show space. A twenty-minute documentary ‘In Bed with Invader’ following the artist round one night’s work in Paris will screen in the gallery’s video room. Vending machines crafted by Invader himself will dispense fifteen all-new stickers. New print editions will also be available at the show and on theoutsiders.net. These mondo marvels and stellar souvenirs will crush everything in their path this Christmas at ‘Attack of the Space Waffles’. Plus the gallery will smell really cosy, too.

Cut & Paste / Secret Wars @ Aloft London

Last week we headed deep into East London for the launch of a new brand new design hotel next to London's ExCel Convention Center in the Docklands. The Aloft London Excel is the first Aloft hotel to open in the UK and is set to shake up the staid mid-market hotel sector by delivering urban-influenced design at prices we can all afford.

The hotel launched with a digital art battle featuring artists from Cut & Paste and Secret Wars. Artists went head to head to create a piece of art inspired by a theme of ‘Innovation in East London.’ It was the first Cut & Paste Battle we had attended and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the artists battling it out with  their artwork in front of a live audience. The winner on the night was decided by the guests in attendance, with Sam Bevington's design winning the crowds over. As part of digital art battle prize, the artist's winning artwork was projected onto the side of the hotel building pictured above. This was the first event which saw Cut & Paste collaborated with the London team at Secret Wars.

We arrived a bit too late to catch the Parkour performers 3RUN at the hotel, but we did bump into our friend and artist Mr Guaky who was taking part in the digital art battle as well as creating some live artwork in the hotel reception space. Renowned East London promoters Urban Nerds were also on hand at the launch providing some banging tunes, with Urban Knights, Rattus Rattus & Klose One and Sophie Lloyd all rocking the decks. A well organized launch party and our first at a hotel, a fun evening was had by all in this beautifully designed space. Plus we almost forget to mention the impressive cocktails at the hotels w xyz bar which were created by cutting-edge mixologist Ruth Ball of Alchemist Dreams!!  Click here to check out the hotel.

Playing the tunes were DJs Ben UFO, MC Chunky, Al Fingers and Spencer all played through Suzuki's impressive DIY sound sculpture which draws inspiration from towering, bass heavy Jamaican sound systems. Check out some of our pictures from the launch and have a watch of the video below which follows Yuri Suzuki during the construction of the sound system.

Evol — A SITE FOR EYE SORES

EVOL is the moniker of one of the most exciting developments in global street art. Where most graffiti artists seek to deface buildings, EVOL delicately rebuilds them. Using deftly cut stencils, he transforms electrical boxes and plant pots into high rise apartment buildings - exact replicas of the estate where he spent his childhood in East Berlin.

Now EVOL is coming to London for his first exhibition with renowned street art promoters Pictures on Walls on December 1. Their east London gallery will see the rise of an entire city-scape built from discarded objects intricately customised by the artist.

Open for one month only, this promises to be a spectacular and unsettling experience. Like all the best street art, EVOL makes us look anew at our surroundings and explore ideas of art, its place in society and the beauty of the everyday.

David Walker London Solo Show at Rook & Raven Gallery‏‏

Rook & Raven proudly presents David Walker’s first London Solo Exhibition – ‘Brides on Fire’.

Working in portraiture, painting freehand, yet using only spray paint and without the aid of brushes, David has developed a signature multi- layered style. Walker’s work brilliantly marries both street and fine art. His use of ‘lowbrow’, contemporary materials and deliberate references to the worst excesses of graffiti juxtapose the classical portrait style to disarming effect.

David Walker’s work incorporates dumb marks, countless scrawled lines, clashing colours, drips and decaying letterforms. Ostensibly negatives, these traits are normally associated with the most destructive elements of the graffiti and street art movement. However, the traditional context Walker places them in engenders them with an entirely new meaning. David Walker talks of wanting ‘to make the ugliest of marks within and alongside the beauty of the subject, all out of the same can.’ Hinting at the importance he places upon the potential breadth of his medium.

He writes of this creative process “I like to keep things simple which is why I use constraints, my interest is in the process and exploring mark making to see what I can achieve with the medium”. The idea of working from a limited palate is apparent throughout Walker’s work. The unorthodox colours that help populate Walker’s canvases are a nod to the artist’s past, when he had to beg, borrow and steal anything other than black, white and pink. Thus his work sees rebel culture and graffiti art sensibilities laying the foundation for visually rich portraits that fuse photorealism and abstraction to form timeless, beautiful images on street art scale.

Evan Hecox - BOROUGH and LANE

Evan Hecox is an artist whose work captures the essence of urban environments through a unique process that involves first-hand observations of his surroundings and then progresses into drawings and paintings that are striking in their graphic simplicity. His work recognizes and evokes the constantly evolving nature of cities and of the lives that exist within them. By visually embracing all aspects of these environments he uses the decay and detritus of modern cities as key visual elements in his work, challenging traditional preconceptions of beauty. Like mental snapshots distorted by the haze of memory they both record a place and time as it actually was while simultaneously re-ordering reality by removing certain elements and emphasizing others. In this way his work has the effect of placing the viewer in a certain time and place while also layering it with his own experience.

His cross-disciplinary interest in photography, fine art and design infuses his work with an unusual but dynamic mix, ranging from near photo realism to simplified abstraction. He has exhibited his work widely in the United States as well as exhibitions in Paris, Sydney and Tokyo and others.
In his newest body of work Evan Hecox has concentrated, for the first time, on the city of London.  The city makes for deep and appropriate subject matter for the artist, with it's intricate network of neighborhoods, streets, canals and old buildings that form the backdrop for it's bustling population.  He has sought out areas that are less traveled by tourists and has focused instead on parts of former industrial and working-class London, going east to Shoreditch and Hoxton, to the side-streets of Camden Town, along Regent's Canal and south to Brixton and Battersea, as well as traversing the streets and underground of the city center.

His multimedia works on paper offer an outsider's view of the seemingly mundane moments and places in life, yet it is often in these details that a city's true character is revealed. Rather than impossibly trying to document all things about such a vast urban landscape, his work seeks to observe the overall mood and atmosphere of London, capturing gray, overcast days with his silver and black monochromatic pieces and making use of more colorful and abstracted visions that express the life and vitality of thecity.
