Go Hard Or Go Home at The Rag Factory

Often self taught and with a healthy disregard for the ‘rules’, today’s most influential and exciting artists haven’t tread the traditional gallery path to success. Instead they come from a host of seemingly diverse and unorthodox backgrounds; Street Art, Graffiti, Rave, Skateboarding, Film, Design and Fashion.

Each drawing on these essentially DIY and typically outsider cultures to produce unique work that has made these artists must haves in prestigious collections across the globe; Go Hard Or Go Home exists to highlight the global reach of these acclaimed artists, showcasing new work from both it’s established players and the newer emerging artists.

The show is curated by J Patrick Boyle. Founder of Bristol’s acclaimed Steal From Work collective, he himself has a diverse art practice and first became involved in the art that emerged from the rave scene of the early 1990′s. He has chosen a group of established and emerging artists linked by their ‘non-traditional’ routes to art fame but also by the boldness and exciting nature of their work.

HUSH: FATALES at The Outsiders London

Lauded worldwide for his passionate canvases and murals, Fatales sees Hush’s work evolving beyond his trademark portrayals of Japanese subjects. Whilst the Manga-influenced Nipponettes that made his name will still feature, Fatales also includes portraits of modern-day European seductresses.

Hush’s vamps are simultaneously imposing and compelling, alluring and unobtainable. They have no skin tone and their features are blanked out, producing a confrontational avatar of female sexuality.

The show will feature twelve paintings in Hush’s sought-after lavish style, ranging from one and a half metres square to miniature works. Some smaller pieces will be editions of two, and the exhibition will also feature sketches giving a glimpse into the complex technical approach the Newcastle-based artist employs.

The seemingly collage aspects making up the backgrounds in Hush’s works are actually painted and screen printed. “My methods involve action painting and ‘pure expressionism’,” says the formally trained artist. “My 2000 square feet studio is covered in canvases and paint. I go through all these different vibes in the studio, covering the canvas in paint, throwing my tags and dabs on it… it feels like the action painting movement at that point. I’ll also place tags of people I’ve met and who’ve influenced me. My previous activity informs the next, so Fatales features tags from New York. A tag is an expression of action painting, if you want to through the theory of why people do tags.”

Perhaps the most potent aspect of Fatales though is it’s thoroughly sexy but, in its own way, ultimately unisex. “Street art can be seen as masculine, aggressive and disruptive,” says Hush, “But add a female form and it can be beautiful.”

Scorpio will indeed be rising for the opening of Fatales early this November.
HUSH: FATALES opens Thursday 31st October from 6 – 9pm at the Outsiders Gallery.

LAZARIDES AND THE VINYL FACTORY PRESENT: BRUTAL

Lazarides and The Vinyl Factory present a savage new exhibition of original artwork over a sprawling creative space in central London. In response to the theme BRUTAL eighteen artists are showcasing dynamic installations, murals, film, animation, sound and dance interventions in a cavernous space below 180 The Strand.

BRUTAL follows Bedlam (2012), The Minotaur (2011), Hell’s Half Acre (2010), Shut Down Show (2008), and Shadow Lounge Auction (2007) to become Lazarides’ sixth adventurous off-site exhibition coinciding with Frieze Art Fair. The exhibition will see brand new works from regular contributors Antony Micallef, Doug Foster and Lucy McLauchlan as well as artworks and performances from a diverse range of international guest artists.

Lazarides’ newcomer, LA based Cleon Peterson, will be unleashing his anxiety riddled world of violent figures and chaotic battle scenes on central London with one of his largest murals to date, alongside multi-layered murals from Outsiders favourite DALeast and a unique installation from Chicago’s contemporary graffiti star, Pose.

Esteven Oriol displays an intimate portrait of LA gang culture in his unmerciful photographic pieces, alongside Bill McRight’s fierce handmade weapons designed from found objects and street paraphernalia. NYC veteran Todd James aka REAS brings a fresh comic book animation with a colourful sense of horror to the show, while chilling film installations from Doug Foster and Karim Zeriahen submerge visitors into a haunting experience far away from the modern metropolis they entered from.

Strictly for the brave and forward thinking BRUTAL will explore the brutality of the times we live in and deliver a remorseless exhibition that will shock, move and surprise visitors.

“A BRUTAL show in a beautiful building for brutal times” Steve Lazarides

In a new home at the Old Truman Brewery this year, Moniker Art Fair will continue in a tradition of disrupting the status quo with a Voodoo inspired installation from London-based artist David Shillinglaw and a new project, 'Meet me in the City' from the painter and animator Jo Peel, where visitors will walk through a London street of abandoned buildings, crumbling walls and surprising multimedia experiences.

Moniker will also offer visitors the chance to sit for a portrait by Keira Rathbone, otherwise known as 'Typewriter Artist' who creates intricate portraits on 1950s typewriters.

Elsewhere, visitors will be plunged into an Apocalypse Now-style Thai jungle with the maverick Souled Out Studios - Bring your bandanas, ration packs and mosquito repellent!

Artist Ryan Callanan has devised an installation featuring retro sign-writing craftwork alongside his signature wall mounted acid smileys that highlight the thin line between dance celebration and deadly poison.

Hang-Up Gallery create a vintage snug room complete with panelled walls, trinkets, sofas and rugs to create an immersive ambience in which to view the art and there is also the chance to interact with the virtual Lego creations of Ego Leonard.

Anthony Lister NEVER ODD OR EVEN - PART 2

Anthony Lister - Solo Exhibition Never Odd or Even Part 2 which Includes an interview of a great musician: Carla Azar

Carla Azar was involved in the exhibition Never Odd or Even, she perfomed during the opening night of the show under the direction of Anthony Lister. She is an American musician and a member of the band Autolux. She is known primarily for playing drums and singing in Autolux. She has also collaborated with the artist/painter Mark Whalen, (also known as Kill Pixie) on several art exhibitions from 2009-2011, creating music for installation rooms for the artist. Carla played drums on Jack White's latest album, Blunderbuss, and has also been touring with Jack White throughout 2012.

Anthony Lister was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1979 and he received his BFA at Queensland College of Art in 2001. He was a pioneering force in the stencil and street art movement in Brisbane before moving to New York City in 2003 to apprentice under Max Gimblett. He employs a sophisticated, fine art, painterly style in both his street art and his works exhibited inside galleries. High and low culture clash in his paintings, drawings, and installations where boorish superheroes, flirtatious ballerinas, bad-tempered old masters, and imperious vamps raucously coexist. With exhibitions worldwide, Lister's latest shows in Milan and Los Angeles have turned his focus back to the human form, and more specifically, the female figure as ballerina. An interesting counterpoint to the recent Degas show in London, Lister presents a more rough-hewn, but surprisingly delicate take on the dancer's body. Today, he lives and works in Brisbane and is represented exclusively by the Robert Fontaine Gallery.

JR returns to London after five years with a two-part solo exhibition, ACTIONS, at Lazarides Rathbone and multiple sites across the nation's capital.

Works within the gallery will highlight various actions JR has accomplished around the globe and will include images from Wrinkles of the City in Berlin (spring 2013), his journey to North Korea and his 2005 Portrait of a Generation. Megan and the Burobbu Boutique Exhibition

Grace and Peril are proud to present a new solo show of limited edition, experimental paintings by popular artist Tom Lewis

Following two hugely successful solo shows in recent years, Megan and the Burobbu Boutique will see Tom taking over a space in BOXPARK, Shoreditch from 4th October to 24th December (with more that a little help from those mysterious pink blobs, The Burobbu).

This mini show is a playful sneaky peak into the future wandering of Tom’s mind, as the colourful small scale sketches hint at themes which will appear in his upcoming 2014 show. Following the initial show, from November the box will be transformed into a Burobbu Boutique, showcasing sculptures, paintings, prints, posters and a plethora of other goodies.

Blending elements of ancient mythology, traditional oriental design and contemporary street art, Tom’s style is unique and instantly recognisable. Each piece adds to the epic patchwork narrative that exists inside his head, tip toeing the line between logical meaning and beautiful nonsensical chaos.

Exhibition: 4th October – 24th December 2013
Opening times: Mon–Sat 11–7pm, Thurs 11– 8pm / Sun 12– 6pm
Private View: Thursday 3rd October 6.00 – 9.00 pm
